Common Loon

Canada's national bird, the common loon is famous from its appearance on the millions of dollar coins. These coins are referred to as 'a loonie&' from the bird pictured on the face.

The loon is a water bird slightly larger than a duck and can be found all over Canada.

Canada Geese

Another symbol of Canada and despite the enormous numbers of Canada Geese they are a nationally protected species.

You can find Canada Geese all over the world. I photographed this pair on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River.

Owls

At night, away from the bright lights and noise of the cities, owls can be seen all over.

Canada has a good selection of different owls which can be found across the country.

Magpies

The number of magpies in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is surprising.

This pair were basking in the sun in Kiwanis Memorial Park.

Mallards

Perhaps the commonest duck in the world. The mallard is no stranger to Canada and can be found all over the country. This pair followed me on a walk in Stanley Park, Vancouver.
