Moose

Moose are found all over rural Canada with habitats usually
being wet grasslands and forest edges. Moose are semi aquatic
animals spending a lot of time just standing in lakes and
rivers. This can make an interesting sight.
Although moose numbers are quite high, they are very shy
animals and are often only seen as they collide with vehicles.
A moose stands at over 2 metres tall with a 2 metre wide ‘rack’
of antlers. The legs are over a metre which when hit by a
car results in the legs being broken and the body of the moose
rolling over the front of the vehicle and, at high speeds,
removing the entire top section of the vehicle. Decapitation
by moose is not unheard of.
The moose in the top and bottom pictures are both male moose
under 2 years old with a new set of antlers. The centre picture
is a profile shot of a female moose showing the moose’s
unusual shape.
The best place to see moose are in Newfoundland, especially
in and around Gros Morne on the west coast north of Corner
Brook. Moose are also found all over northern Ontario, Manitoba,
Saskatchewan and in the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. The Yukon
and Northwest Territories also have strong moose populations.
Moose have very poor eye sight but exceptional hearing.
