Elk

When you are in elk habitat there is no shortage of them. In and around the mountainous regions of Alberta and British Columbia I found hundreds of them.

Elk are easy to photograph and watch but can be aggressive. They are actually the most dangerous animals in Canada due to the frequency in which they kick people who get to close. Rutting males can also cause problems and I saw a nice new Mercedes that had been severely scraped, mirror missing and a window cracked from an elk that was not happy about something.

Elk are found in groups and often hang around road sides and also along the railway tracks where they eat grain fallen from freight cars.

Moose

Make sure to see this selection for Moose Pictures

Moose are found all over rural Canada with habitats usually being wet grasslands and forest edges. Moose are semi aquatic animals spending a lot of time just standing in lakes and rivers. This can make an interesting sight.

Although moose numbers are quite high, they are very shy animals and are often only seen as they collide with vehicles. A moose stands at over 2 metres tall with a 2 metre wide ‘rack’ of antlers. The legs are over a metre which when hit by a car results in the legs being broken and the body of the moose rolling over the front of the vehicle and, at high speeds, removing the entire top section of the vehicle. Decapitation by moose is not unheard of.

The moose in the top and bottom pictures are both male moose under 2 years old with a new set of antlers. The centre picture is a profile shot of a female moose showing the moose’s unusual shape.

The best place to see moose are in Newfoundland, especially in and around Gros Morne on the west coast north of Corner Brook. Moose are also found all over northern Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and in the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. The Yukon and Northwest Territories also have strong moose populations. Moose have very poor eye sight but exceptional hearing.

Mule Deer

Mule deer and the similar looking white tailed deer are very timid animals.

I found both these types of deer in the grassy areas in the valleys between the Rocky Mountains in Alberta.

The mule deer are pictured here. They stand about 1.5 metres tall and are usually found solitary or in pairs.

Caribou

Also known as reindeer, caribou are extremely hard to find and are very rare. They live only in the high mountain areas of Canada, away from settlements and roads.

Natives in Canada use caribou in traditional dishes.

The antlers are almost as tall as the caribou themselves.

Long Horned Sheep

Found in the Rocky Mountains, the curious long horned sheep are often seen on and along the roads like this one I photographed on the Icefields Parkway between Jasper and Lake Louise.

The sheep come onto the road to eat the snow melting salt. Unabated by traffic, they often use the roads as an easier way of travelling. Cars are forced to drive around them and provide a source of entertainment and amusement.
