Beaver

Known as officially the largest rodent in the world. The larger than cat sized beaver is a symbol of Canada.

The beaver lives in a lodge made from branches and logs collected from nearby. The car sized lodge floats in a lake or still river, moored to the lakebed. Other trees are chewed through until they fall and moved to block rivers to create an artificial lake. This allows fish to congregate and fishing for the beaver becomes a lot easier.

Humans and beavers are the only animals on the planet that adapt their environment to suit themselves. It is amusing how one are considered pests because of it.

Rattlesnake

Found in northern Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and some parts of British Columbia, rattle snakes are a deadly addition to the wildlife found in Canada.

Rattle snakes are not very common through widespread and it is rare for them to even be seen.

Chipmunk

The furry little chipmunk can be found in the warmer parts of Canada especially in the prairie provinces. There are a few types of chipmunk all of which are the size of a mouse.

This little one I noticed next to a park bench in Saskatchewan.

Gopher

Gophers in Canada are like rabbits in Europe. They are everywhere.

These amusing little animals scurry around between their burrows and are all over the place. Only about 15-20 centimetres tall, the gopher is a character in its self.

This one was watching children play in a park in Calgary.

Butterfly

Butterflies are as common in Canada as any other country. A variety of them can be found all over.
